A World War II veteran, Raymond Weeks first came up with the concept of honoring all the veterans on November 11th, not just the soldiers who had died in the World War I. Later in 1982, Raymond Weeks received the Presidential Citizenship Medal from Ronald Reagan for his outstanding contribution in Veterans Day celebration.
In 1971, the celebration was moved to the fourth Monday of October, but in 1978 Veterans Day again came back to its original day, that is 11th November. On Veterans Day, the National Veterans Award is given and the ritual started in 1954 in Alabama.
On November 11th, 1921 an American war hero was buried at Arlington Cemetery. The identity of that soldier is still unknown and thus his graveside is termed as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
